Followed instructions re trashed files and uninstalled Office 365. Re-installed and attempted to open old Word for Mac 2011 files through double clicking a Word for Mac 2011 file. This worked as it opened Word 365. I repeated this operation for other files with succsess. Then attempted to open files from inside Word 365 opening app and clicking on recent files in the app.

Same splash screen saying 'Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges.' Then attemped to open file by reverting to quitting Word 365 and double clicking files again.
